Your brain’s electrical activity, brain waves, or thought patterns are unlike anyone else’s. In fact, your brain waves are just like your fingerprint: uniquely your own.
And the human brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons. Through electrical oscillations or brain waves, the neurons control how the brain functions. Whenever internal or external forces disrupt normal brain activity, dysfunction can occur — and that’s what makes our approach so groundbreaking.
What is MeRT Treatment?
MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy), is a non-surgical, non-invasive, and drug-free, emerging technology. In essence, we use MeRT to reprogram abnormal electrical signals in the patient’s brain to ultimately modify behavior.
The treatment uses brainwave analysis to isolate specific areas of the brain that are not functioning or communicating the way they should. Then, using specialized equipment, we gently stimulate these distinct areas of the brain to improve function.
More specifically, MeRT uses an individualized approach by obtaining a qEEG, a diagnostic study that measures the pattern of electrical signals in the patient’s brain. This study not only tells us what is not functioning properly in the brain but also helps us determine how the brain should be operating.
Using this information, we then create a precision treatment protocol using rTMS. During this procedure, we place a set of magnets on the scalp to send electrical signals back into the brain in a manner that causes re-organization of the signals, stimulating and organizing the function of neurons in the brain. This process is called neuromodulation.
What is the difference between MeRT and rTMS?
MeRT differs from other similar technologies because of our highly individualized approach using the patient’s own brain waves to make a treatment plan. Other similar technologies (such as rTMS alone) have a predetermined treatment protocol based mostly on the diagnosis. Additionally, most rTMS treatments deliver stimulation to one area of the brain at a fixed frequency.
However, due to our initial thorough testing and evaluation, our MeRT approach is highly individualized in both frequency and location.
Treatment Steps We Follow:
-
Evaluation
We begin with our diagnostic tools, a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and an electrocardiogram (EKG). These tests measure brain wave frequencies, heart rate, and brain-heart coherence, in order to determine the current state and functioning of the brain. The qEEG provides the information for us to create a brain “map” that identifies patterns of dysfunction consistent with various brain disorders, such as brain injury, emotional disorders, learning problems, and behavioral issues.
Once we complete these tests, our scientific and clinical teams will then carefully analyze the results and determine the current state and functioning of the brain.
-
Analysis & Protocol
We use a patented, scientific approach with the data gathered through testing to develop a highly customized treatment plan that is aimed at encouraging healthy brain communication and function.
-
MeRT Treatment
You will simply sit in a comfortable chair while a trained technician carefully positions the magnet against your head. This device produces a magnetic field to induce mild currents in targeted regions of the brain. There is no pain and no electrical currents, just a slight sensation.
We apply stimulation for 6-8 seconds per minute, and appointments last anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes.
The equipment used by the MeRT approach has been cleared by the FDA in the treatment of depression and may be used off-label for other disorders in the practice of medicine.
-
Progress Evaluation
Following the initial week or two weeks of the assessment period of treatment (depending on your condition and age), we will perform an additional EEG and EKG. This will allow us to assess progress and make any needed adjustments. In this way, we are always taking the best and most exacting approach with your treatment, based on the current neurological state of your brain patterns.
Common Benefits Experienced*
- Improved Sleep
- Increased Relaxation
- Better Concentration and Focus
- Improved Memory and Mental Clarity
- Decreased Pain
- Better Mood
- Increased Ability to Cope with Stress
- Increased attention span
- Improved sociability
- Increased motivation
- More clarity of thought
- Less cravings (such as drugs or alcohol)
- Improved emotional stability
- Increased ability to adapt to change
- Improved self-confidence and self-esteem
This highly individualized, targeted approach homes in on the specific non-functioning areas of the brain, then gently works to improve communication and functionality. This is the science of addressing each person’s distinctive brain state individually.
*Results and improvements are based on active and strict observation of our regimens. Results may vary based on the individual users and are not guaranteed.
Mini-Documentary about MeRT Treatment
This documentary explains the MeRT Treatment protocols and how it works.
MeRT Featured on Dr. Mark Hyman’s “Broken Brain” Podcast for Treatment of PTSD, Concussion, TBI
The famous podcast, “The Broken Brain,” promoted by Dr. Mark Hyman, featured using MeRT for treatment of PTSD, Concussions, and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). If you or someone you know has experienced any of these conditions, it is certainly worth listening to this.
Dr. Erik Won, from our Brain Treatment Center in California, speaks about utilization of this technology to treat members of the military who have had traumatic brain injuries, concussions or who have experienced PTSD because of their experiences, with many incredible successes.
With other repercussions that can occur, for both military and veterans, this is incredibly important. For example, suicide is at twice the rate for veterans, with approximately 17 veteran deaths per day. In a high-stress environment, such as serving in the military, the transition afterward can be complicated and there are often underlying reasons for conditions that may occur. MeRT may help to address these issues.
We highly recommend you listen to this incredible presentation.

Is MeRT the Right Treatment?
We understand that MeRT is a relatively new, cutting-edge treatment and you may not be certain if this is right for you. However, this is not a decision that needs to be made right away or all alone.
Your first step is a simple phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. During this call, you can discuss your symptoms and history, ask all the questions you want, and have her explain the protocols, fees, and details of treatment.
Next Steps
Then, if you are interested in taking the next step in seeing if MeRT treatment is right for you, we can set up an appointment for an EEG (a simple, painless, and non-invasive brain scan) and a second appointment for a consultation.
When your test results are in and have been analyzed, you will have a one-on-one consultation with the doctor. We can hold this appointment virtually from the comfort of your own home. During this appointment, we will discuss your symptoms and our treatment protocols, and you can get all your questions answered. Then, you and the doctor will determine together if you (or your child, if this is about your child) are a candidate for treatment.
Assessment Period
If you and the doctor then decide to move forward with MeRT, the next step is what we call the Assessment Period. During this time, we will perform a short period of treatment, followed by a new EEG to see if you are responding. We assess this based on the new EEG results as compared to the initial one done before treatment started, as well as symptom improvements.
If there is a positive response to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements, and we can then schedule the additional treatment duration.
